Boys u18.5 Connacht Div 1 League semi final – Carrick 23pts Ballina 20pts

Carrick RFC U18.5s won their Connacht Division 1 League semi-final with a thrilling 23-20 win over Ballina at home on Sunday. Carrick got off to a quick start when, on 2 mins, a kick from Robert Hanrahan was pounced on by Ben O Connor to score the first try. For the larger part of the first half Carrick defended well against a physically imposing Ballina pack.

Ballina got their reward after 20 mins when they broke through for their first try. Carrick responded well with two converted penalties from Peter Moran, to see the half-time score 13-7 in favour of the home team. The second half saw Ballina come out strong and within 5 mins they went over for their second try. Penalties were exchanged by both teams, which saw Ballina ahead (16-20) with 3 mins to play.

With both teams tiring and with players in the bin, Carrick mustered the energy to drive up the field, and following a tap and go from a penalty, Tristan Hoey powered over for a try in the last minute, which saw Carrick get a dramatic win. Credit to both sides for a tough and sporting encounter.

Carrick U18.5s will be in action again in the Connacht Division 1 League final.
