Carrick-on-Shannon put in an impressive team performance to win the Connacht U17 Division 2 League title when defeating Ballinasloe on Thursday December 17, at Creggs RFC.

Ballinasloe started well but good defensive tackling by Ciaran Dorr and Alastair Hewson kept Ballinasloe at bay until the eighth minute when Ballinasloe’s McKeigue converted a penalty.

On the restart, Carrick made their way up the pitch and after 10 minutes Luke Charles went over for a try converted by Conor Kelly 7-3 Carrick.

In perfect conditions, Conor Kelly’s tactical kicking was supreme but good defensive tackling by Ballinasloe kept Carrick at bay. On 21 minutes, Kelly converted a penalty to make the scoreline 10-3.

Ballinasloe went on the attack but Carrick kept them to just another McKeigue penalty on 28 minutes.

Again, from the kick off, Carrick made their way up the pitch and were awarded a five metre penalty in the corner. Charlie Slevin  took a quick tap penalty, sold a dummy pass and  charged to the line before slipping a pass for Ronan Connolly to score a try  in the corner. 15-6 to Carrick at half time.

Ballinasloe came out in the second half knowing that they needed the next score but all they had was a missed penalty seven minutes in.

Great upfront tackling by Ballinasloe kept them in the game until Connolly after a great break from defence galloped down the field and timed his pass beautifully for Tadhg Rogers to touch down, converted by Kelly (22-6).

Ballinasloe replied with another penalty  (22-9) but again from the restart Carrick worked their way down the field for Alastair Hewson to score a typical captain’s try, converted by Kelly (29-9). Kelly then converted another penalty and try as they might, Ballinasloe were not allowed to cross the line, even for a consolation try which left the final scoreline 32-9 to Carrick on Shannon.
