Carrick’s U13 Connacht Cup campaign Carrick continued last Sunday with a visit to Galway Corinthians. As both sides have been undefeated in their group so far this was a clash to see who would emerge on top of Group 1B.
Corinthians started strongly and aggressively but Carrick, being well warned of their threat stood strong and found a foothold in the game. With the initial storms weathered Carrick started to launch attacks of their own and struck first through Henry Kieran. Despite Corinthians best efforts they repeated the dose with Conor McGirl skipping across the line. This put Carrick in a very strong position, but Corinthians struck back to leave it 12-7 at the break.
Corinthians attempted to assert their authority in the second half but again Carrick stood strong. They also made the most of their attacking opportunities pilfering two tries on the left through Jack Turley, one scored after a devastating break by debutant Scott Gillard.
The intense effort put in by Carrick started to take its toll and fresh legs were rotated in to stem the tide. Corinthians scored two converted tries to leave the bare minimum in it, but thankfully the line came in time for a famous win 22-21.
This was a victory based on defence and defiance. The achievement of all the squad of gaining a victory away at one of Connachts biggest clubs is one they can be proud of.
