Carrick Edged Out in Tight Battle with Corrib RFC

Carrick RFC hosted Corrib RFC in a tightly contested J1C league clash over the weekend. Despite a determined performance, Carrick fell just short in a match that went down to the wire. Corrib started strong, stretching Carrick’s defence to score a well-taken try out wide, which was converted. Carrick responded with intensity, and after sustained pressure, Shane McGuinness powered over the line to level the game. Shortly after, Carrick took advantage of a Corrib mistake, and Ian McGhee slotted a penalty to give the home side the lead. Carrick’s momentum continued when Patrick Charles, showing blistering speed, broke through the Corrib defence off the back of a scrum to score under the posts, with McGhee adding the extras. The hosts led 17-10 at halftime. Corrib came out strong after the break, using the blindside to score a try in the corner, though the conversion was missed. Carrick hit back, working their way into Corrib’s five-metre zone, where McGuinness drove over for his second try, extending the lead to 24-15. As the game wore on, Carrick found themselves under pressure. A series of penalties and two yellow cards left them short-handed. Corrib took advantage, scoring a breakaway try under the posts and narrowing the score to 24-22. Another penalty conceded by Carrick allowed Corrib to take a slim 25-24 lead with minutes to play. Carrick battled hard to regain control, earning two late penalties, but both attempts fell short, leaving Corrib to claim a narrow victory. While the result was frustrating, Carrick showed plenty of grit and promise, setting a strong foundation for the rest of the season.
