Carrick Battle Hard but fall to Corrib in Super 4s Clash

Corrib RFC 27 Carrick RFC 7

Carrick RFC’s senior team travelled to Headford on Sunday for their second round Super 4s J1C League encounter with Corrib RFC. Despite a determined performance Carrick fell short against a well drilled home side who capitalised on key moments to claim victory in breezy conditions. The game got off to a fast start with Corrib striking first after just five minutes with an unconverted try in the corner. Carrick responded well controlling possession for long spells and applying serious pressure. However a few costly errors prevented them from turning territory into points. Corrib made the most of their opportunities and after twenty five minutes extended their lead with another try in the corner. Carrick refused to back down and soon found themselves camped inside Corrib’s five metre line. After a dominant scrum they were inches away from scoring but were held up over the line. Corrib managed to clear their lines and just before halftime the hosts struck again to lead fifteen nil at the break. The second half saw Carrick come out with renewed intensity. They dominated the scrums and possession taking the game to Corrib at every opportunity. Their hard work was finally rewarded when Liam McNanmee powered over from a tap and go penalty with Ian McGhee adding the conversion to make it fifteen seven. Carrick continued to pile on the pressure but an unfortunate turnover led to a Corrib breakaway try under the posts which they converted. Despite this setback Carrick kept fighting controlling large portions of play. However a stop start period filled with scrums and knock ons disrupted their momentum. In the closing moments Corrib broke away once more to score in the corner sealing the win. Though the result did not go Carrick’s way there were plenty of positives to take from the game. The team showed great determination dominated the set piece and never gave up. With one Super 4s game remaining against Loughrea away next Sunday at 2:30pm the focus now shifts to finishing the league campaign on a high. The big prize still lies ahead with the J1C Cup Final against Galwegians in two weeks. Carrick will take the lessons from this match and come back stronger ready to give it everything in the final
