U16 Connacht Cup: Seeding Match

Carrick RFC 17
Ballinadloe RFC 5

This was a very evenly matched affair, particularly in the 1st half with both teams crossing the line once to leave it 5-5 at half time. In perfect conditions, Carrick were surprised at the ferocity of the Ballinasloe tackling and very competitive rucking. This was a very different Ballinasloe team that Carrick dispatched so easily (35-0) in October.

Poor tackling, a disorganised backline and a surprisingly ineffective scrum allowed Ballinasloe dominate territory and prevented Carrick from getting any foothold in the game.

This Carrick team dont panic however and a very positive talk at halftime resulted in a much more organised performance both defensively and offensively in the second half.

A second try following pressure on the Ballinasloe 5m line was just rewards . Carrick definitely edged the territorial stakes in the second period. This fact and the much improved tackling and decision making kept Ballinasloe pinned down in their own half. Great kicking into touch and into space made life difficult for B’sloe throughout the 2nd half. It wasnt long before Carrick sealed the game with a third try 5 minutes from the end which was converted.

The ability of this team to not panic under pressure, problem-solve on the pitch and the performance of the subs when they came on was very reassuring and bodes well.

Much work to do still and the next three to four weeks are crucial if this squad is to fulfil its undoubted potential.

Final score:

CARRICK RFC 17
BALLINASLOE RFC 5
