U13 Boys – Westport RFC 22 – Carrick RFC 53

Carrick-on-Shannon’s Under 13 Boys team were away to Westport Saturday.

A cold but bright afternoon for the game played against the backdrop of a snow capped Croagh Patrick. Carrick dominated the first half with a physical performance by the forwards that created a strong platform. Tidy ruck ball, good hands across the back line and pace out wide led to a superb first try of the game with less than 3 minutes played. The simple things done well throughout the first half with Carrick playing some of their best rugby of the season, running in a further 6 tries to take a commanding 41 points to nil lead.

Westport rallied strongly in the second half and noticeably increased their physicality. Carrick having made changes at half time, and trying out new partnerships, did not keep their shape as well, leaving gaps in defence that Westport exploited, scoring 4 tries of their own, 3 of them unanswered in the last quarter of the game. A sporting encounter which both sides will have learned from.

Carrick look forward to their next game at home to Ballinrobe next weekend.
