U14 Boys Division 1
Carrick OS RFC 31
Galway Bay RFC 12
Carrick’s Under 14 Boys welcomed Galway Bay on Saturday in their Division 1 League campaign. Damp and overcast, but otherwise dry on the foot and good pitch conditions with no wind, made for perfect playing conditions in front of the home crowd.
Galway Bay, a well drilled team, came out firing on all cylinders in the opening exchanges and managed to keep Carrick pinned down in their own 22 for some time before Carrick managed to gain ground with a decent clearance kick and follow up work. From here Carrick kept Galway Bay in their own half with strong defensive work that yielded possession to Carrick. Despite good tackling by Galway Bay, Carrick’s ability to retain the ball and recycle from strong ball carrying, proved to be too much for Galway Bay with Carrick crossing the line on two occasions with one of the tries converted. Galway Bay made a final attempt before the end of the first half to cross the line, but despite repeated attempts in close courter battles at Carrick’s goal line, Carrick was able to leave Galway Bay scoreless at the end of the first half with a lead of 12-0.
Carrick continued with their form in the second half and scored two tries in the first 10 minutes which were both converted. From a line out at about the halfway line, Galway Bay got a break at the front of the lineout and scored their first try of the match to make the score 26-5. Carrick managed to stay in Galway Bay’s half after the kick off and scored another try from a pick up from a scrum in Galway Bay’s 22 to make the score 31-5 with less than five minutes left. With less than a minute to go and with Carrick defending a scrum in Galway Bay’s 22, Galway Bay managed to get out of their 22 and ended up with their second try (converted) with great teamwork and individual running to make the final score 31-12.
Carrick will continue their Division 1 campaign next weekend at Sligo RFC, who is so far unbeaten this season.
