Galwegians 2nds 52-15 Carrick RFC
Carrick Rugby Club faced a challenging match on Sunday as they traveled to Galway, ultimately falling 52-15 to a well-drilled Galwegians 2nds team. The game didn’t fully reflect Carrick’s effort and resilience, given that they traveled light with multiple injuries against a Galwegians squad that included AIL (All-Ireland League) players.
Carrick started strong, looking organized in the early stages. However, a fortunate bounce allowed Galwegians to gain territory, and a sequence of smart phases led to the opening try. Carrick responded by driving deep into Galwegians’ half, eventually earning a penalty that Ian McGhee converted, making it 7-3 with 20 minutes played.
Carrick’s defense showed grit, holding off Galwegians for much of the first half. However, after sustained pressure, Carrick conceded a penalty, which the home side converted. Just before halftime, Galwegians added another try, extending their lead.
The second half saw Carrick come out fighting, but the experience in the Galwegians ranks soon became evident as they scored early. Undeterred, Carrick’s forwards pushed forward, creating an opportunity for McGhee to cross over for their first try. Minutes later, Brendan Flannery added a second try, putting Carrick back in the game.
Despite gaining momentum, Carrick’s limited bench options began to show as fatigue set in. Galwegians seized the opportunity to run in four more tries in the final 25 minutes, eventually putting the game out of reach. While the scoreline favored Galwegians, Carrick’s performance showcased their defensive strength and fighting spirit, especially under challenging conditions. With a full squad, the outcome might have been much closer.
Carrick looks to bounce back as they continue their season, proud of their resilience against high-level competition.
