Boys U14 Div 1 – Creggs RFC 22 Carrick RFC 34

Having already qualified for their place in the Division 1 Semi-Final after their win against Sligo RFC last weekend, Carrick’s U14’s travelled to Creggs RFC on Sunday with a hope to secure a home Semi-Final.

Getting ready in Creggs’s newly built facilities was a stark contrast to the gale force conditions that were awaiting the two under 14 teams on Creggs’ 4G pitch. With even stronger wind and rain forecasted for later, Carrick elected to play against the wind in the first half hoping to have a lead at half time that they could manage in the second half with the wind.

Creggs were quick of the mark in taking opportunities with strong individual ball carrying when Carrick were still thawing out and managed to score two quick tries within the fist 8 minutes of the game to lead by 12-0. But Carrick showed tremendous character by not getting flustered and working hard to retain possession and setting up the backline to score two tries for Carrick, one of which was converted to make the score 12-12. Creggs kept taking opportunities, they were strong up front and contested every breakdown, but Carrick’s defense were by now more switched on and managed to keep Creggs from running away with a big lead. Both teams scored a try each to make the score 17-17. With the half time buzzer a minute away, Creggs scored a well deserved try from a well-executed and clever line out move to lead the game with 22-17 at half time.

Playing with the wind, Carrick found themselves in Creggs 22 often and forcing Creggs to play out of their 22. With pressure on Creggs back line and Creggs’ forwards appearing tired from being forced to play out of their 22, Carrick started to control the game and kept Creggs scoreless in the second half whilst scoring 3 tries, one of which was converted, to make the final score 22-34 to Carrick.

A dominant performance by Creggs in the first half, but resilience and clever positional plays by Carrick saw Carrick coming out victorious against an accomplished and well coached Creggs RFC team. Carrick’s win over Creggs sees them moving into 1st place in Division 1 with one League game left against Buccaneers RFC at home on Sunday 1st December and their home Semi-Final the weekend thereafter.
